Prayer & Meditation Room

The puja room or meditation corner — the spiritual heart of the home.

Traditional Vastu guidance

  • The north-east (Ishanya) is the ideal location; north or east are alternatives.
  • Face east or north while praying.
  • Idols are not placed directly against the wall; a small gap is left. Very large idols are avoided in homes.
  • Avoid placing the puja room under a staircase, in a bedroom, or adjoining a toilet wall.
  • Use light colours — white, cream, light yellow; keep the space clean and lamp-lit.

Practical & building science

  • Oil lamps, incense and camphor produce smoke and fine particles. Ensure the space has a window or ventilation, and avoid burning incense in a closed room for long periods.
  • A quiet corner with soft natural morning light suits meditation.
  • Keep lamps on a non-combustible base and away from curtains.

Common challenges

No space for a separate puja room

A wall-mounted shrine or a small cabinet in the north-east of the living room is common and traditionally acceptable.

Traditional Vastu recommendations are presented for cultural and educational interest and are not guaranteed to produce any particular outcome. For structural changes or safety questions, consult a qualified architect or engineer.
