Main Entrance
The threshold of the home — its direction, placement on the façade, and how it welcomes light, air and guests.
Traditional Vastu guidance
- North, east and north-east facing entrances are generally considered most auspicious.
- The exact position along the wall matters: each side is divided into padas (segments), some favourable and some not. For example, on an east wall the northern part is preferred.
- The main door should be the largest door in the house, open inward and clockwise, and be solid and well-maintained.
- Keep the entrance clean, well lit and uncluttered; avoid placing it directly in line with the back door.
- Auspicious symbols — a torana, rangoli, Swastika or Om — are traditionally placed at the threshold.
Practical & building science
- An entrance with a covered porch or canopy keeps rain and sun out of the door and creates a pleasant transition zone.
- A door aligned with an opposite window or opening helps cross-ventilation when both are open — though some prefer to avoid a straight-through view for privacy.
- Good lighting at the entrance is a safety feature; motion-sensor lights are inexpensive.
- Fire safety codes require that the main exit is unobstructed and opens without a key from the inside.

Common challenges
Our apartment door faces south
You usually cannot change it. Tradition suggests remedies such as a threshold strip, auspicious symbols, or bright lighting. Practically, focus on a well-lit, welcoming and clutter-free entry.
