Religious significance

The linga here is Dakshinamurti — facing south — which is unique among the Jyotirlingas. The pre-dawn Bhasma Aarti, in which the linga is adorned with sacred ash, is one of the most famous rituals in India. Ujjain hosts the Simhastha Kumbh Mela every twelve years. The Mahakal Lok corridor was opened around the temple in 2022.

Traditional story

Tradition tells of the demon Dushana, who tormented the devout people of Avantika (Ujjain). Shiva burst forth from the earth as Mahakala, destroyed the demon, and at his devotees' request remained there as a Jyotirlinga.

Legends are presented as they are told within the tradition; they hold spiritual meaning for devotees and are not offered as historical record.
